After studying the predicted wind direction for the next few days, we decided that the best place to begin our passage to Eleuthera would be Warderick Wells Cay (Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park). We called ahead and asked to be on the list of boats requesting a mooring ball in the park. At 9:30 a.m. the official park mooring ball lady called on VHF and assigned us a ball at Emerald Rock which is near Warderick Wells. So, off we went onto the Exuma Banks from Norman’s Cay.
The Banks, as we’ve mentioned before, are shallow and usually provide smooth sailing. This sail to Emerald Rock was very windy and not at all smooth. John put a reef in our sail and we charged out making good time to our destination. Below are two pictures of a yellow hulled boat we passed along the way. They must have had three reefs in their sails as you can see that they have very little sail out. Also, they were pulling two dinghies. We were heeled over so far that I had to bend down in the cockpit to shoot the pictures. Hopefully you can get a feel of how choppy it was—especially for the banks.
After we hooked up to our mooring ball at Emerald Rock, we dinghied over to the park office and hooked into their internet. Here’s a picture of John reading while I’m blogging with all of you. What you can’t see is that John is trying to get the little bananaquit bird to pose on his finger for the picture. Of course, the bird decided to comply right after I snapped the shot! So it goes.
