Day 148- SCUBA trip and anchoring at Fish Cay

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Today we booked a SCUBA trip with Troy Aubury and Dive Guana. We only have above-the-water pictures here as Finley's underwater camera doesn't work below 30 feet. We had two dives--one tank each--on the reefs just outside the Man Of War Cut. The dive guys were great helping us with equipment getting into and out of the water. Also, they led the dive as we explored around the reef, under some ledges and through a short tunnel. There was a family of three diving with us so we were a group of six. At first we were surprised to see that the fish loved Troy so much, but then we realized that he was feeding them cracker crumbs.

We didn't get a picture of Troy--the dive master--but here is his able-bodied first mate Calvin.

After our SCUBA adventure, we hauled up the anchor and sailed out to some small, uninhabited cays in the middle of the Sea of Abaco-- Fish Cays. The plan was to get away from the tourist places and enjoy the Bahamas off by ourselves. We set our anchor in the lee of one of the cays. John and Finley strapped on masks and fins again to explore these reefs. Below is a video of a star fish on one of these reefs.

Finley was into the geology of the Bahamas. This is one of his pictures of a geological point of interest. It is a tree trunk and roots which have turned into limestone or something like that (Fin, feel free to add a comment). We had purchased a book on how the Bahama Islands were formed, but couldn't make much sense of it. Fin, however, devoured the book and tried to teach us what he'd learned. Thanks Fin!
