Exploring Staniel Cay

Day 62- Internet at Staniel Cay Yacht Club and a Tour of Town

Today is Monday, February 2, 2009. The project for today is to find some internet connections and get caught up on email and blogging. Staniel Cay Yacht Club had just what we needed—free internet, a conch burger and a Kalik (Bahamian beer). What a nice friendly place for hanging out and catching up. We even found a local newspaper that was only a couple weeks old—good deal!

Then we gave ourselves a tour of downtown Staniel Cay. The pictures below are of main street. There were no ATMs or provisions. Two little grocery stores had hardly anything on their shelves and what they had was overpriced.

When we got back to Staniel Cay Yacht Club, these fellows were cleaning fish and throwing the guts out to a crowd of fat lazy sharks. Wouldn’t you expect sharks to boil into a feeding frenzy when the bloody innards hit the water? Oh no, these sharks were well fed. They kept moving in calm circles and the shark nearest the food just opened his mouth and slurped down the treat. We think they are nurse sharks, but will welcome your input if you know them to be some other kind of shark.

So, it was a nice day. Guess folks back in North Carolina are getting ready to celebrate Gladys’s 90th birthday in a couple of weeks. Sorry that we’ll miss that!

  1. I beleive nurse is correct. They mostly hang out on the bottom and eat small things.

  2. Thanks Fin! Come on out and help us identify sea life in person!
