South to Current Island

Days 56— From Spanish Wells to Current Island, Eleuthera
This is Tuesday, January 27, 2009. We have enjoyed the friendly and busy little town of Spanish Wells. Folks were charming and eager to help—but these are the FAR ISLANDS as the gal in the Yamaha store explained when she could not locate a sheer pin for our 4 hp outboard (we were hoping to carry a backup sheer pin). And there were no bars & grilles here, but the gal in the sandwich shop fed us conch salad and warmed up some rice & chili even though their kitchen was closed. And, finally, we called the guy at the dock on our VHF (we have no phone, ya know) and got him to order some drinkable water to be delivered for $.50 a gallon.
We called Bandit again to see when he was coming to get our mooring rent. He was off shore somewhere in his boat, so he said to leave his rent with the nice guy at the dock when we stopped to get fresh water. The 40 gallons of water arrived in huge bottles that had to be returned, but the water guy said for us to take our time and leave the bottles with the dock guy. Pouring water from 5 gallon jugs into our tanks was tedious—but had to be done.
We left Bandit’s rent and the empty water bottles with the dock guy who also sold fresh sea food. We bought a pound of lobster from him and off we sailed south to Current Island. It was a short but blustery trip—just a couple of hours. Our anchorage behind Current Island was sunny and warm. We almost considered swimming, but decided to change into our bathing suits and lounge in the dinghy instead. John demonstrates this activity in the picture below.

  1. I think the drought is over here. We got out of school at noon yesterday. Off today (that's #5). Another snow wave is on the way tonight. With luck, we will use # 6 & 7. Eat a lobster for me!
